Stroke Association

Stroke Assiociation logo

  • Every 5 minutes, at least one person has a first stroke.
  • Nearly a quarter of the population will have a stroke in their lifetime.
  • Stroke is the number one cause of severe disability in the UK.
  • Stroke kills three times more women than breast cancer.
  • Over 40% of strokes could be prevented.

These are shocking statistics, but despite its prevalence, the profile of stroke and support given to the cause remain extremely low. The Stroke Association is the only major charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. Our mission is to reduce the effects of stroke on patients, their families, carers and communities.

We help stroke patients and their families through our support groups, information helpline, and the provision of welfare grants; we fund research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation; we also campaign, educate and inform to increase knowledge of stroke at all levels of society; and we act as a voice for everyone affected by stroke.

The Stroke Association remains seriously under-funded compared to many other health charities, and we rely primarily on voluntary donations from individuals and companies to sustain our work. You can help us by putting your used inkjet cartridges and/or mobile phones in the freepost recycling bags and popping them in the post.

If you have any further enquiries please don't hesitate to contact us on 0800 435576 (only from the UK) or complete our online form.
